Cerrigydrudion water environment centre reopens

A WELSH water centre near Cerrigydrudion reopened this week after a revamp and has gone green in a bid to boost the area’s environmental credentials.

Welsh Water’s Environmental Education Centre, in Alwen, has been repainted green to blend in with its forest backdrop, and had its windows replaced with eco-friendly items as part of the refurbishment.

Llinos Owen, a full-time teacher at the centre, said:

"It’s a real pleasure to come to work and see the building looking so good. The centre is in such a scenic setting and has an historic background, so I really think it’s important that it fits in with its surroundings."

Welsh Water officials say the centre helps to play an important educational role in the Vale, attracting school groups from across North Wales and teaching them more about using water efficiently.

"The children have always loved coming to the centre at Alwen, but now it’s an even more impressive place to visit. Welsh Water has made this investment now, so youngsters in the area will continue to learn in a pleasant environment" said Fiona Jehu, the company’s Environment and Education Officer.

The centre is one of four learning facilities operated in Wales by the firm, which won the Silver Jubilee Big Tick Award for its education programmes.
