A WREXHAM man with learning difficulties was hardly brassed off last weekend when he was treated to a surprise concert from Llangollen musicians for his 70th birthday.
Members of the Llangollen Silver Band paid a Gerrard Brassington, who has lived in the Llanerchrugog Hall care home on the outskirts of Wrexham for over 30 years, to play the special set.
"Gerrard was well made up with the performance and really enjoyed it, and took a bit of time to take it all in" said Peter Greenwood, the home’s manager.
"For members of the band to put themselves out to do that performance is a shining example of community spirit."
The band, who formed in Llangollen in 1904, have been performing concerts at a variety of venues for over a century, including a performance in Chester city centre earlier this month where many members had to perform sat on their instrument cases thanks to a shortage of seats.
Members took up Gerrard’s request after hearing that his health and mobility problems had restricted his ability to continue his passion for brass bands, and played a 45 minute concert at the home.
"It’s an important aspect of our work to be involved with all members of the community and what pleased me with this concert was the amount of our younger members who turned out to play for Gerrard. The smiles on their faces made it a great show" said Trevor Williams, the band’s conductor.
Gerrard is also trying to trace members of his family who may be living in the Northrop area. If you are able to help please contact Llanerchrugog Hall on 01978 840186.
