Football: Corwen lose out in FAW Trophy to Rhos

CORWEN 2 RHOS AELWYD 4

FAW WELSH TROPHY FINAL

HEARTBREAK for Corwen on the biggest day in the club’s history as fellow Welsh National League outfit Rhos Aelwyd lifted the FAW Trophy at Cefn Druids on Saturday.

Rhos started the brighter, and took the lead after five minutes when Tony Cann went past Richie Bodden, then played in Matty Holmes, who placed the ball past outstretched keeper Nathan Aldridge into the bottom corner.

The second Aelwyd goal came just 10 minutes later as a defensive error allowed Cann to score from 12 yards out.

Corwen came close to reducing the deficit, Iwan Jones forcing a great save out of keeper Kevin Andrews from inside the box.

Manager Richie Pierce decided to take drastic measures and brought himself on after half an hour.

The change seemed to improve the defensive display, as Rhos failed to create any clear cut chances in the remainder of the half, while Dewi Edwards came agonisingly close to scoring for Corwen, sending his shot just wide.

The second half saw an improved performance from Corwen, but they fell further behind when Rhos defender Rob Salisbury rose high to head home.

Corwen were able to pull one goal back as Iwan Jones scored a diving header from a corner whipped in by Eilir Edwards.

However, Rhos netted again within minutes, Geraint Williams converting at the far post after some impressive wing play from the tricky Jose Alkatraat.

Corwen had shouts for three penalties, but only one was given and Eilir Edwards put that one away to set up a slightly nervous finish, but it was Rhos who deservedly claimed the coveted cup.

Corwen’s best hope of success this season now lies in the Premier Division Cup. This Saturday they entertain mighty Brymbo in the semi-finals, 2.30pm kick-off.
